3. The 25th National Japan Bowl
The regular registration is due on 1/13/2017. The registration process for this year is done mostly online. Please check the following website for more information.
4. MAATJ Haiku Contest (Deadline: March 3)
MAATJ (Mid-Atlantic Association of Teachers of Japanese) invites students of Japanese language in the Mid-Atlantic area to enter their haiku poem for 20167 MAATJ Haiku Contest! Each school may submit a maximum of three Haiku per category. We will accept your submission only by Email with attachments. The application form is below.
M-0. Elementary 3rd and 4th graders (immersion, FLES or any program)
M-1. Elementary 5th and 6th graders (immersion, FLES or any program)
M-2. Middle School 7th and 8th graders (immersion or any program)
J-1. High School Japanese 1 equivalent (may include 8th graders)
J-2. High School Japanese 2 equivalent
J-3. High School Japanese 3 equivalent
J-4. High School Japanese 4 equivalent
J-5. High School Japanese 5 (or higher) equivalent
C-1 College 100 level
C-2 College 200 (or higher) level
· Must be original work.
· Must be written in Japanese.
· Must consist of three lines with the syllables of five, seven, and five.*
· Must include a season-referencing word.
Ø Second vowel of long vowels such as a, i, e, o, or u counts as two syllables.
Example: otoosan 5 syllables, kuuki 3 syllables
Ø Small "tsu" of double consonants counts as one syllable.
Example: motto 3syllables, yukkuri 4 syllables
Ø Contracted sounds such as kya, kyu, kyo, etc. count as one syllable.
Example: kisha 2 syllables, ningyoo 4 syllables
Submission Information for Teachers
· No fee for the current MAATJ member’s school. $10 entry fee for non-member’s school.
· Each school may submit three or fewer entries for each category.
· Each school is encouraged to hold an in-school contest.
· Please use one Haiku Submission form per category (up to three students)
· Submitted haiku may be published after receiving permission from the teacher.
· Please use MS Mincho font and fill in all information on the Haiku Submission form (attached to this newsletter).
· In each category, the top three places will be selected and will be awarded with trophies and certificates.
· When a school does not follow the above regulations, the application will be disqualified from the contest.

5. AATJ 2017 Year of the Rooster Nengajo Contest (Deadline: Dec. 27)
The AATJ Nengajo Contest is a nationwide contest for students in elementary school, middle school, high school, and university. All participants receive a certificate of participation. Winners at each level in each category also receive certificates and prizes from AATJ.
The Nengajo Contest is an excellent advocacy and teaching opportunity for your program. Many students love artistic pursuits, and this is their chance to shine in your class. It also represents an excellent chance to practice language and culture.
**Not only high schools, but colleges/universities are also encouraged to apply.
6. ** NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR CHAPLIN MEMORIAL AWARD **
The Hamako Ito Chaplin Memorial Award is conferred annually on a current graduate student or full-time instructor of Japanese for excellence in Japanese language teaching. The $1000 award is administered through the Association for Asian Studies. A full-time instructor who has completed graduate study within the last 3 years in an area that directly involves Japanese language teaching is eligible. The deadline for nominations is February 3, 2017.
7. Registration for the 2017 National Japanese Exam will open on December 14, 2016, and close on February 19, 2017

8. Japanese Government Scholarships for Japanese Studies
Applications are now being accepted for a new program of one-year Japanese Government scholarships for Japanese Studies.
These scholarships pay for undergraduate students to study for a year in Japan. Applications for 2017 scholarships must be submitted by February 17 to the student’s nearest Japanese Consulate. 10. The Kobe College Corporation-Japan Education Exchange (KCC-JEE) 2017 High School Essay Contest is now open. Applications are available online at http://www.kccjee.org/high-school-essay-contest This year's deadline is February 1, 2017.
The winner receives an all-expenses paid trip to Kyoto for one month in summer 2017, which includes intensive language study at Kyoto Japanese Language School and a homestay. The 2016 winner's essays is posted on the website.
Eligibilty: Must be a currently enrolled high school student, who will have completed at least one year of formal (in person, face-to-face) Japanese language study by summer 2017, and who will be at least 16 years old by June 1, 2017. Students must not have previously traveled to Japan.

2．Workshop for Teaching the Japanese Culture in Class by Dr. Yuki Johnson (12/10)
There was a half day workshop at the Johns Hopkins University on 12/10. This was the third of the workshop series by Dr. Johnson. There were about 30 participants from various institutions. Dr. Johnson discussed from the pedagogical to the practical aspects of teaching the Japanese culture in class. She has shared with us number of ready-to-use multi-media materials that she offered to make them available with the teachers who are interested in using them in class. This was also a great opportunity to share ideas and opinions, and to network each other. Dr. Johnson has already offered the fourth workshop (it will be on “particles”). The MAATJ will be sending out the information when we find out more details for this fast growing workshop series
